Local Schools

Except for the San Juan Institute (formerly Lapog Educational Institute) and the K of C (Knights of Columbus) Learning Center which is a pre-school, all educational institutions - high school and elementary - are public schools.  There are no tertiary or college institutions in the municipality. Lapogueño college students go to Vigan, nearby provinces of Ilocos Norte and La Union, and even as far as Baguio City and Metro Manila for their tertiary education.

There are 3 national high schools located in the barangays of Solotsolot, Bacsil, and Nagsuputan.  A total of 23 public elementary schools are scattered in the different barangays of San Juan.

Msgr. Cosme Fang Center

The Msgr. Cosme Fang Center has for many years now served as venue for seminars sponsored by government and non-government agencies.  It is where lay leaders brainstorm the social action programs of the church.  It is the NAMFREL (National Movement for Free Elections) headquarters during polls.  At the same time, it is available for lease as venue for wedding banquets, birthday celebrations and other special occasions.

Museum

The Museo de San Juan Bautista was established to serve as a repository of Lapog's (San Juan) history. It is located at the ground floor of the parish convent.  It houses antique materials that depict Lapoguenio lifestyle in years past. Many Lapogueños have donated their own personal mementos to the Museum.  Most of the information found on this site were sourced from there.

Culture and the Arts

Despite exposure to Western and other foreign cultures, Lapogueños have retained a large part of their cultural heritage.  Folk dances are shown during fiesta celebrations and are still taught in schools. Religious traditions are  strictly practiced by the Catholic Lapogueños especially during the Lenten Season. Traditional beliefs and practices are still adhered to especially by elders Lapogueños.

The people get to enjoy the finer things in life during concerts and other shows usually held at the Msgr. Cosme Fang Youth Center (Parish Hall).

Recreation

Just like every Filipino, the Lapogueños love basketball. Anytime of the day children can be seen dribbling a ball at the two basketball courts (Msgr. Cosme Fang Center and the town plaza).  Every year, in almost every barangay during fiesta celebration, there is a basketball tournament. The parish's basketball court was the venue of the Vivencio Soria, Sr. Memorial Cup from 1992-1998.  Invitational games where teams from other towns come to play are also done by different civic groups in the municipality.

Through the local cable TV system provided by the Northern Sky Cable Television, Inc., Lapoguenios can watch TV programs from national and international channels.

A Globe Telecom cellsite in Brgy. Darao keeps Lapogueños connected with their relatives and friends all over the country and the world through mobile phones.  Other service providers include Smart, Sun Cellular and Touch Mobile but only Globe has set up a cellsite in Lapog.  And the presence of telephone lines has made many Lapogueños, especially young ones, Internet-savvy.
